Among hunters, ranchers, and others who demand hardworking machines, Can-Am is probably best known for its Defender UTVs and Commander series of side-by-sides. It builds several more-than-serviceable ATVs as well, with the Outlander series best suited to meet the needs of trail riders and outdoorsmen who want to get into – and out of – the backcountry in nearly all conditions.
Outlander Mossy Oak Hunting Edition 1000R
For 2018, Can-Am has introduced a 1000-series Outlander covered in Mossy Oak Break-Up Country camouflage. But the 2018 Can-Am Mossy Oak Hunting Edition 1000R is more than just an Outlander with a camo treatment. The purpose-built machine takes into account all the factors hunters want and need.
An ATV is only as good as its suspension, and Mossy Oak’s Outlander is off-road ready. The beefy yet maneuverable chassis is fitted with dual A-arm front suspension that offers a rock-clearing nine inches of travel and stiffer springs that won’t bottom out under heavy loads. A set of 26-inch Carlisle A.C.T. HD 6-ply radials delivers increased ground clearance and a smoother ride over all types of terrain.
Can-Am is well known for its Rotax engines, and the 1000R continues the tradition with a growly 976cc V-twin powerhouse. The liquid-cooled, 89-hp, 976cc unit is powerful and responsive, delivering thrust that’s a bit surprising for such a big machine. It easily speeds on the straightaways and grinds up steep climbs.
The blown-out Can-Am XT package includes a winch and upgraded bumpers, but the Mossy Oak Hunting Edition also offers up user-friendly controls, heated grips and throttle control, and a reinforced seat for butt-saving comfort on those long rides to the stand. Kolpin added its leading 6.0 Impact Gun Boot, which attaches via an integrated bracket.
Outlander North Edition
Can-Am’s North Edition ATV is built for the wilds of winter, but it’s just as capable all year long. The snow beast is available in either 650 or 850 series machines. The former features a 62-hp motor, while the bigger machine gets fitted with a 78-hp V-twin engine.
What sets these machines apart are the creature comforts designed to make riding and working in wintry conditions not only tolerable, but also pleasurable. A high windshield screen keeps wind and snow at bay, but is easily removable when conditions improve. The grips and thumb throttle are fully heated through four different settings, while an accessory outlet lets the rider plug in to keep fog from clouding up his visor. Full mudguards protect both the machine and rider from debris.
