I was about froze as I waited for my hunting partner Richard, to shake something out from Walter’s low ground. Two hours of waiting and watching…nothing…so we decided to go back to my shop and warm up by the wood stove. As we approached the shop, Richard said “Herman, do ya hear that…sounds like some shooting over towards the Smash place!” I allowed as how it might not be a bad idea to take a stand overlooking my pasture. …not a bad idea…that was an understatements, as what was about to rapidly unfold was the event of a life time! In very short order there he came, out of the woods on the far side bounding directly towards us, about 500 yards away. I couldn’t believe my eyes…his rack was HUGE…the biggest I’d ever seen…coming RIGHT to us! “Richard here he comes…let him come on some more before you shot!” I decided for some odd reason to give him 1st crack. When the deer didn’t drop on Richard’s 1st shot, I decided to seal the deal! The taxidermist said he grossed out at 160 B&C…not a record book whitetail, but the biggest deer anyone in our area could remember! To say the least, a supremely exciting and memorable morning for the both of us, and as well for all of the hunters from the Ridgeway Hunt Club!
